Build Your Own Coffee Table
Create a stunning centerpiece for your living room from scratch using basic woodworking.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Cut Your Lumber
Cut four 2x4s to 16 inches for the legs. Cut 1x4s into two 36-inch pieces and two 18-inch pieces for the apron. Cut 1x6s to 42 inches for the tabletop.
Always measure twice and cut once. Use a speed square for straight cuts.
Build the Leg Assemblies
Attach one short apron piece between two legs using wood glue and pocket screws. Repeat for the other side. Ensure the legs are square.
Pre-drill all screw holes to prevent wood splitting.
Connect the Frame
Join the two leg assemblies with the long apron pieces. Check for square by measuring diagonals - they should be equal.
Clamp everything in place before driving screws.
Attach the Tabletop
Lay out the 1x6 boards on a flat surface. Glue and clamp them together. Once dry, attach to the frame with figure-8 fasteners to allow for wood movement.
Leave 1/4 inch gaps between boards for a farmhouse look, or butt them tight for modern style.
Sand and Finish
Sand the entire table starting with 80-grit, then 120-grit, then 220-grit. Apply your chosen stain and finish with polyurethane for durability.
Always sand in the direction of the wood grain.
