Fix a Leaky Faucet
Stop that drip for good with this comprehensive guide covering all faucet types.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Turn Off the Water Supply
Locate the shut-off valves under the sink and turn them clockwise to close. Turn on the faucet to release any remaining water pressure.
If there are no shut-off valves, you'll need to turn off the main water supply.
Remove the Faucet Handle
Look for a decorative cap on the handle and pry it off to reveal the screw. Remove the screw and pull the handle straight up to remove it.
Take photos as you go so you remember how everything goes back together.
Inspect and Replace the Washer or Cartridge
For compression faucets, replace the rubber washer. For cartridge faucets, pull out the old cartridge and insert a new one. Match the exact replacement parts.
Bring the old parts to the hardware store to find exact matches.
Reassemble the Faucet
Apply plumber's grease to the new parts, then reassemble in reverse order. Tighten all connections snugly but don't over-tighten.
Hand-tight plus a quarter turn is usually sufficient.
Test Your Repair
Turn the water supply back on slowly. Check for leaks around the handle and at the spout. Run the faucet through hot and cold cycles.
If it still leaks, double-check that the cartridge is seated correctly.
